GLADIATORS SWEEP HARRIS COUNTY TO ADVANCE TO AAAA SEMI-FINALS (5/15)
The Gladiators rolled on through the third round of the playoffs by sweeping Harris County by scores of 4-2 and
4-1. On a night that featured outstanding pitching performances by Matt Gorst and Ryan O’Connell as well as a
number of highlight reel worthy defensive gems, the Gladiators made the most of their scoring opportunities
putting an end to Harris County’s season.
Game 1 – Matt Gorst and the Gladiator defense put down Harris County 1-2-3 in three of the first four innings.
Gorst mixed in 3 strikeouts over the first four innings and the Gladiator defense was stout including a
round-the-horn double play to end the first inning as Justin Mihalik fielded a ground ball at third, fed Steven
Siegfried at second. Siegfried made the turn to complete the double play to Ryan O’Connell at first. Brandon
Gold turned in an ESPN Web Gem-worthy play for the first out of the 3rd inning. Diving to full extension to his
left, Gold fielded a sharply hit ground ball, got to his feet, and fired to first to get the out.
Both offenses were held in check until the 5th inning. Harris County plated a single run in the top of the
inning, but the Gladiators answered right back in the bottom half of the frame. Steven Siegfried led off with a
line drive to center. Ryan O’Connell laid down a bunt single to put men on first and second. Chase Solomon
followed with a bunt single of his own. A throwing error by the pitcher allowed Siegfried and Beck Heigl, who
was pinch running for O’Connell, to score and Chase Solomon to advance all the way to third. A Dylan Dore
sacrifice fly plated Solomon to make the score 3-1 Gladiators. Skye Overton reached first after being hit by a
pitch. With Overton on the move from first, Gold hit a ground ball to second that was misplayed allowing the
ball to reach the outfield. Never stopping, Overton rounded the bases to score and up the Gladiators’ lead to
4-1.
Gorst worked out of a jam in the 6th, but Harris County attempted a 2-out rally in the seventh. After pitching a
stellar 6 2/3 innings, including 5 strikeouts, with men on second and third, Gorst turned the ball over to Whit
Collmus on the mound. Harris County managed to score a single run in the frame before Collmus induced a ground-out to
end the game at a final score of 4-2.
Game 2 – The nightcap started out strong for the Gladiators when with 2 outs, Skye Overton homered to deep left
field to put the Gladiators up 1-0 after a half inning of play.
Dylan Dore led off the top of the third with a double to left field. Skye Overton then singled with Dore
advancing to third. Utilizing a double-steal, Overton stole second allowing Dore to steal home. A throwing
error then allowed Overton to advance to third. A Brandon Gold sacrifice fly plated Overton to make the score
3-0 Gladiators.
Harris County tried to get something going in the bottom of the third when with one out, Harris County put a
man on first via a single. That runner strayed a little too far off first and was picked off by O’Connell.
Steven Siegfried ended the inning with a Web Gem of his own with a diving spear of a line drive to his bank-hand
side.
Both teams went 1-2-3 in the 4th and 5th innings, but the Gladiator offense struck again in the sixth. Justin
Friend doubled to the left-center gap to lead off the inning. With Beck Heigl pinch running for Friend, Matt
Gorst singled to right field to score Heigl and push the Gladiator lead to 4-0.
Ryan O’Connell kept the Harris County batters off balance all night long. Harris County managed to plate a
single run in the bottom of the sixth, but it was all that O’Connell would cede on the evening. O’Connell held
Harris County to just 4 hits in a complete game outing where he also struck out 3 without allowing a walk.
Enjoying multi-hit nights on the evening were Dore (3, including a double), Overton (3, including a home run),
Gorst (2), and Siegfried (2), O’Connell, Solomon, Friend, and Salomon also added hits on the evening.
With the sweep of Harris County, the Gladiators advance to the AAAA semi-finals to face Loganville. The
semi-finals will start on Monday, May 21 with the Gladiators traveling to Loganville. Game times are at
4:00 and 7:00 PM.
